Gap-filling Weather Radar Dedicated in Reno, Lamar County
Reno, Lamar County, TX, November 30, 2023 – Last week, the City of Reno Police, Fire, and Water Department officials together with Lamar County Emergency Management and senior leadership from its partner, Climavision, a weather-tech data pioneer, dedicated the city’s gap-filling weather radar. Installed on one of the city’s water towers in August of this year, the system is now operational and providing critical low-level radar coverage and visibility into weather events as they move into the region. Owned, operated, maintained, and fully funded by Climavision, the system is designed to supplement weather coverage in between neighboring NEXRAD S-Band radars, where low-level data voids often exist due to regional topography and the nature of weather radar technology. A radar beam moves higher in the atmosphere the further it gets from the radar location, which can leave some areas, such as Lamar County, exposed to weather phenomena that often happens in the lower atmosphere including flash flooding, sleet, ice, and tornadoes.
